A Long Day, Sunday Tee Times

HANOVER – If you are trying to sell Shane MacDonald on the idea that he teammate Andy Hydorn of Houston had a long, tough day in the 33rd annual Tommy Keane Invitational at Hanover Country Club Saturday, MacDonald’s not buying.

Although the Lebanon amateur and his partner from Houston had to play six extra holes to win their opening match over Duane and Bill Vielleux and then went an extra hole before losing to Doug and Peter Williamson, MacDonald wasn’t complaining.

“We were in carts and it wasn't raining, so it was fun,” he said. “This is a great tournament and now we'll come back and play 18 tomorrow.”

Because of the long morning match, MacDonald and Hydorn played 43 holes in one day, a TKI record if not a personal mark. “We may have played that many in Scotland because we'd play 36 holes and then go out for another nine after we went to the pub,” MacDonald said with a grin. “We had a good, solid match this morning. Billy Vielleux played unbelievable. We fought back and I ended up birdieing the 24th hole to win the match. Then we had a quick burger and went back out.”

Dartmouth-bound Peter Williamson won the afternoon match with a birdie on the 19th hole.

“Peter Williamson played excellent this afternoon,” said MacDonald. “He hit the ball well. On the last hole he hit it out of the rough, high and soft for a good shot in and then made birdie from 10 or 12 feet.”

The Williamsons will now take on the team of Doug Lantz and Nick MacDonald – Shane’s son – who moved on with a 1-up win over Mike Hathorn and Mitch Cable. “Maybe we wore them out for Nick,” Shane cracked.

The winner of that match will square off for the championship in the afternoon against the survivor of a match between former Dartmouth teammates Jeremiah Daly and Jeronimo Esteve and the team of Dean Cashman and Mike Pollard.

Daly and Esteve advanced to the morning round with a 4&2 win over John Donnelly and Rowland Hazard while Cashman and Pollard move on by knocking off six-time champions Mike and Scott Peters, 4&3.
