Cashman Cashes In

HANOVER – After Mitch Cable rolled in a dramatic 20-foot putt to square the championship match of the 36th Tommy Keane Invitational on the 18th green Sunday afternoon it seemed almost inevitable that one of two things was going to happen.

Cable’s teammate Mike Hathorn, who had played solid golf throughout but hadn’t yet found his putting stroke, was going to nail a big one to end the long day.

Either that or Dean Cashman, whose direction finder had gone on the fritz for three holes down the stretch, was going to duct-tape his swing together just in time to win the championship with former Providence College teammate Chris Hynes.

It would take four extra holes before a large, sunsplashed gallery that swelled throughout the match would learn which it was.

Cashman, who hit two trees and then a cart on the rebound at the 15th hole, lost a ball on the 16th and had to punch out of the woods on the 17th, sent his tee shot on the 22nd hole of the afternoon over the pin on the par-3 fourth hole. It parachuted softly to earth 10 feet behind the cup to set up the never-in-doubt birdie putt that finally clinched the match.

“The wheels were off on the back nine,” Cashman, a former Hanover High standout, admitted with a smile. “I played two different games, the front nine and the back nine. I had three or four birdies on the front and nothing on the back. So I was just happy to have a change of scenery.

“On that putt I just kept my head down. I knew if I kept my head down, I had the read. It was as simple as that.”

Cable knew the match was over before the ball plopped into the cup.

“We all had chances to win on the playoff holes,” he said. “Everybody had good putts but they just wouldn’t fall. Dean hit a great putt on four. I knew it was in the second he hit it. I said, ‘Good putt,’ when it was still a foot from the hole.”

The TKI title is the first for Cashman, who made it to the championship match once before, in 2008. “You want to get your name on that list of great players who have won here,” he said. “It’s a tough field and a lot of things can happen.

“I’ve been out of college 10 years now and I think I’ve played every year since then, so to finally win it is exciting.”

Hynes was thrilled to help the friend he roomed with for three years in college finally claim his first TKI championship.

“I know how much this tournament means to him so it was special to help him win it,” he said. “The competition was outstanding. It was three days of great, great golf. You really have to be on your game to win.”

Down two holes through 13, Cable and Hathorn, won the 14th and 16th to square the match. A Hynes seven-footer combined with a Cable miss well inside that left Cashman’s team 1-up on the 18th green.

But Cable made up for the miss with the long putt in front of the clubhouse that forced extra holes.

“Mitch putted great all week,” said Hathorn. “After that it was going to be the first one to make a birdie wins. Dean played great and he got it. You want to win, but he and Chris are great guys so you can’t be disappointed losing to them.”

The eventual champions made it to the final match by knocking off Jim and Andrew Jankowski in Sunday’s semifinals, 1 up. Cable and Hathorn advanced courtesy of a win over Jake Obar and Billy Vielleux by a 3&2 score.

DIVOTS
Cashman and Hynes played with Hathorn and Cable in Friday’s qualifying. Cashman-Hynes shot a 67 while Hathord-Cable were medalists with a 65 . . .

Defending champions Shane and Nick MacDonald won the championship flight consolation with a 4&3 win over Chris Keane and Dillon Sass. . . .

David Farina and Darin Eddy took the first-flight title with a 7&6 win over Hanover High golf coach John Donnelly and Rowley Hazard. Bob Donahue and Tim McCarthy took the second flight in 19 holes over Joe Dalimonte and Don Dunworth. . . .

The pairing of Carlos Cutler and Tom Lombardi, which finished last in qualifying, rebounded to win the second flight consolation.

Cashman-Hynes Win

The Championship flight of the TKI goes to Dean Cashman and college roommate/teammate Crhis Hynes in 22 holes. Cashman's birdie on the fourth hole proved the difference in a win over Mitch Cable and Mike Hathorn. Check back tonight after I take care of the media. . . .

Wrapping Up Saturday

Tonight's story is below . . .

Hurricane Warning

HANOVER – It would be an exaggeration to say Mike Hathorn’s emotions will be as confused as a chameleon on John Daly's pants Sunday when his match in the morning round of the 36th annual Tommy Keane Invitational golf tournament is decided. But perhaps not as much of an exaggeration as you might think.

Hathorn, who coaches the Hartford High School golf team with his brother Roy, has advanced to the semifinals of the championship flight before, but he’s never made it to the afternoon, so playing for the title would be special. But standing in his way is Jake Obar, a precocious freshman for Hartford back in Hathorn’s first year as an assistant coach with the Hurricanes. And Obar’s partner? That would be Billy Vielleux, only one of Hathorn’s best friends from childhood.

Hathorn might have mixed feelings about knocking those two out of the tournament except for one thing. A couple of things, actually.

His teammate in the four-ball match is Mitch Cable, another former Hartford Hurricane standout who played for him.

Oh yeah. And Cable just so happens to be his cousin.

“It’s great,” Hathorn said of the way the Tommy Keane has sorted itself out. “This tournament always feels like a family reunion and it’s even more that way this year. I used to play 27 holes a night with Jake when he joined the team and Billy has been one of my best friends all my life. We played Little League baseball together.

“Mitch’s dad and a bunch of my uncles got him playing when he was young, but I think he got even more into it because of Roy and I. So no matter who goes on, I’ll be happy. I can’t be disappointed either way.”

The winner of the Hartford side of the bracket will face the winner of the morning match between the father-son team of Jim and Andrew Jankowski and the team of Dean Cashman-Chris Hynes.

The Jankowskis advanced by eliminating six-time champions Mike and Scott Peters in their Saturday afternoon match. Cashman-Hynes moved on with a win over Chris House and Ryan Fay.

Hathorn and Cable, who qualified for Sunday morning with a 4&3 win over Ben Peters and Shane Wolter, were the medalists in Friday’s stroke play with a 65.

“We are hitting the ball really well,” Hathorn said, “and Mitch is putting really well. He made our birdies. I hit a bunch of greens and I’m hitting it well, but I’m not putting well.

“It will come. As long as I can get Jake Obar to read my putts I'll be fine,” he said with a laugh.

That would be just fine with Obar, who volunteered to do just that after helping his team knock off Ted Byrne and Mike Pollard 4&3.

“I can read them for him. Read them wrong,” he cracked. “I hope Mike tries eight different putters tomorrow.

“But seriously, it’s going to be a lot of fun. When I was in high school I used to play 27 or 36 holes after school with Mike and his brother every day in the spring. My mom always knew that Mike and Roy would drop me off at home at dark-fifteen. Mike and Mitch are playing well so it should be a good match. We play together a lot but it will be serious.”

DIVOTS
Perhaps the match of the day was the morning battle between the team of Hanover graduates Ben Peters and Shane Wolter, and the team of Ted Dardani and Noel Volpe. It went 23 holes and didn’t end until Peters made a birdie on the fifth hole. . . .

Challenging that for the top match was the Obar-Vielleux 1-up win over defending champions Shane and Nick MacDonald in the morning. . . .

The reuning Whitney family has one team still alive as former Hanover High golfers Bart and Drew made it to the semis in the first flight. Awaiting them is the team of Hanover golf coach John Donnelly and Rowley Hazard.

A Real TKI Reunion

HANOVER – Rex Whitney’s friend didn’t give up much information. Sure, he said, he could score Rex seats to see the Red Sox at Fenway Park Wednesday night, but he wasn’t making any promises about how good they might be.

Living in Alexandria, Va., these days, Rex probably would have welcomed standing room with an obstructed view at Fenway. But as it turned out his friend was having a little fun with him because the seats were good. Real good in fact. Monster seats. Front row Monster seats.

It’s a pretty safe bet that when something like that isn’t necessarily the highlight of your week you are enjoying a pretty good week. And Rex Whitney, who turned 28 Friday, is having a good one. So are his oldest brother Drew, who lives in Reno, Nev., middle brother Bart, who lives in Charlotte, N.C., and his parents, Doug and Martha, who live in the college town of Brevard, N.C.

The Whitneys, you see, are together as a family for the first time since Rex graduated from James Madison University in 2008. And what do they have to thank for bringing them together? The same thing that has brought so many brothers and fathers and sons and friends together the last week of July for 36 years now.

The Tommy Keane Invitational golf tournament at Hanover Country Club.

Not that the Whitneys are strangers to Hanover. They lived here for 37-plus years before Doug and Martha retired to North Carolina to be near Bart and their two grandchildren.

Nor are they strangers to the TKI.

Doug says he’s played in the event so many times over the years he’s lost count. Rex, a top New Hampshire junior when he was at Hanover High, teamed with Bart to win the Keane in 2004 and won it again in ’06 with Jake Obar. All three Whitney boys carried bags in the tournament when they were younger.

“The older two used to caddie every year in the TK,” Martha said. “Rex was born early in the morning on the Friday of the TK 28 years ago today. When Doug brought Drew and Bart in to see the baby they took one look and said, ‘See ya,’ and they were off to the course.”

The thought of coming back this year was planted in Doug’s head when he teamed with old Hanover friend John Manchester to win the member-guest at his home course in Brevard, Connestee Falls Golf Club. Rex, meanwhile, hadn’t played much golf the past couple of years but he was getting the itch after watching Woodstock’s Keegan Bradley win a PGA Tour event and hearing reports about talented young Upper Valley players like 2008 TKI champion Peter Williamson and 2010 champion Nick MacDonald.

Depending on who you ask, Rex decided to play in Hanover after Doug and Martha said they were coming, or Doug and Martha decided to come after Rex committed.

Either way, when he heard his parents and baby brother would be in Hanover Drew left a message on his folks’ answering machine that he’d be flying east to serve as a cheerleader. With that, Bart got on the horn to Hanover pro Alex Kirk and that quickly Drew went from being a cheerleader to Bart’s teammate. Rex would play with high school teammate Nick Lorusso while Doug would team up with his member-guest partner Manchester.

“Isn’t that what the tournament is all about,” marveled six-time champion Scott Peters, who helps run the event. “In many ways it is as much a reunion every year as it is a golf tournament. It’s good competitive golf with good people who come back every year.”

People like a family that traveled a combined 5,248 miles to be together once more at the Tommy Keane Invitational.

“At 72 years of age, in good health and with the whole family here?,” said Doug Whitney. “It doesn’t get any better than this.”

DIVOTS
Rex Whitney and Nick Lorusso carded a 70 to earn the seventh seed in the championship flight. Bart and Drew Whitney shot 75 and are the seventh seed in the first flight while Doug Whitney and John Manchester shot 82 and are seeded fourth in the second flight. …

Hartford High golf coach Mike Hathorn and former Hurricane standout Mitch Cable claimed medalist honors with a 65 although it is believed the medalists have never won the tournament. …

Mike and Scott Peters shot 66 to earn the second seed as they bid to break a tie with six-time champion Brian Doyle for the most TKI wins. … Defending champions Nick and Shane MacDonald shot even-par 71. … Peter Williams, who teamed with father Doug to win the 2008 title and take medalist honors last year with a 62, withdrew from the tournament to play in the Ouimet Memorial. While he was finishing tied for the lead after 54 holes but losing in a playoff in Massachusetts Doug was teaming up with 2010 Hanover High graduate John Chobanian to shoot 70 and claim the 12th seed in the championship flight. …

Mitch Cable won two of the four closest-to-the pin contests at 4 feet, 10 inches on No. 4 and 8-2 at No. 5. The closest shot of the day was by Mike Kelley, who was 13 inches from the hole on 14. …

Match play begins Saturday morning and continues through Sunday afternoon.

The 36th annual Tommy Keane Invitational is slated for Friday, July 29 through Sunday, July 31. The course is in absolutely terrific shape!

Looking to defend their 2010 title is the Father-Son team of Shane and Nick Macdonald. (Or should that be the Son and Father team?)

There could be a few showers on Friday and a couple more on Saturday, but it doesn't look like anything bad. Sunday should be the best day of them all.
