Every Keane Special To the Jankowskis But This One More Than Others

HANOVER – If weddings and family were indeed the themes of the week for the Tommy Keane Invitational the eventual champions had no reason to worry even after falling three holes behind in the blink of an eye.

Jim and Andrew Jankowski, who roared back for a 2&1 win over Pat Pelletier and Adam Pippin, had both themes covered.

The family piece? Jim played in his first Keane in 1979 and by 1989 had seven-month-old Andrew following along in a backpack on his mom’s shoulders. Father and son have played together ever since Andrew turned 18 and he’s 29 now.

The wedding piece? Andrew had little time to linger in Hanover after the match because he had to hop in a car and drive to Boston to catch a 10:10 transatlantic flight to join his girlfriend at a wedding in Nice, France. Correction: He was flying out to join his girlfriend at the wedding reception. He had to miss the ceremony because of a certain family obligation.

That would be the 44th annual Tommy Keane.

“This is the first thing I put on my calendar every year,” said the younger Jankowski, who flew in for the tournament from his home in Santa Monica, Calif. “It was already scheduled before I found out about the wedding so there was no chance I was missing this.”

While teaming up with his father to win the Keane for the first time made his hectic travel schedule worthwhile the start looked anything but promising.

After the teams traded pars on the first hole Pelletier won the second with a 15-foot-birdie. He followed with a six-foot birdie on the third before Pippin knocked home a bomb on No. 4. That quickly Pelletier and Pippin were up three.

At that point the Jankowski’s made a change Jim had suggested a hole earlier.

“We switched our batting order,” he said. “I wanted to switch on the fourth tee and he didn’t want to. He said, ‘We are both playing well. Why switch?’

“I said, ‘We are playing well but let’s just change our mojo a little bit.’ ”

It worked.

The Jankowskis immediately won their first hole, putting both tee balls on the green on 5 and winning with a par when Pelletier went into the woods behind the hole and Pippin couldn’t get up and down.

The difference was three holes again after Pelletier hit to three feet and birdied nine, but the Jankowskis answered by winning 11 and 12 to pull within a hole.

It stayed that way until 15 when Jim, the only one not to reach the green in regulation, chipped in for a birdie that leveled the match.

The Jankowskis went in front for the first time on 16 when Andrew drained the longest putt he or his father would make all day.

Pelletier and both Jankowskis had birdie putts on 17. After Pelletier ran his tricky downhiller well by and Jim narrowly missed, Andrew stepped up and trickled in a six-footer to win the match and give himself a little more breathing room to catch his flight.

Pelletier, who will find out Wednesday if he is in the U.S. Mid-Amateur, gave credit where it was due.

“We had it going early and when we were up three after nine going into holes that I feel suit my game really well I thought we were good,” he said. “But we had a couple we should have won and they never gave any holes away. I knew it was only a matter of time until they went on a run and started making birdies.

“You can just tell they are both tournament tough. I see Jim’s name all the time in tournaments. Andrew obviously played at Dartmouth. Usually the key to this tournament isn’t necessarily making a ton of birdies but keeping pressure on your opponents to force them to make a mistake and they were never in trouble.”

That, according to Andrew, was critical.

“Pat is so tough out here,” he said. “You know he can go out and shoot a 64 on his own ball here so we just had to stick to our gameplan, hit solid shots and avoid making mistakes.”

Because they did that Jim has his first Tommy Keane championship in more appearances than he can count and Andrew has a pretty good story to share at that wedding reception in France.

“This has been part of my life forever,” he said. “It’s a major in the Jankowski family.”

Saturday's Final Brackets

A Day To Remember

HANOVER – A lot of golfers are a bundle of nerves on the first tee of a golf tournament.

Cody Danforth had more reason to feel that way this weekend than most.

Scratch that. He had more reason to be nervous than all of the others in the field of 128 players.

Combined.

Following his Friday qualifying round in the 44th annual Tommy Keane Invitational Danforth knew he was going to drop to one knee at that first tee and propose to longtime girlfriend Jen.

That would be Jen Keane, great-granddaughter of the man for whom the eponymous tournament is named.

As if that wasn’t nerve-racking enough, Danforth was going to pop the question at the base of a plaque honoring the legend who served at HCC from 1922-66. And he he was going to do it with two dozen or so relatives hanging on his every syllable, and a ring in his pocket that had arrived at his parents’ mailbox from a Boston jeweler just in the knick of time.

“My knees were shaking,” admitted Danforth after his Saturday afternoon match. “But it was the perfect moment.”

It was a moment he saw coming four years ago.

“I knew the day I met her I was going to marry her,”  said Danforth, who met Keane in Colorado, where they live.

Jim Keane, Jen’s father, had been in on the secret since the March day when Cody asked for his daughter’s hand, fittingly on a Florida course.

“That was a nerve-racking day also,” Danforth said. “I had to build up the courage to ask him. It took me 18 holes.”

While Jim and Deb Keane knew what was coming their son Chris, brother of the bride-to-be, had no clue even while playing the 18-hole qualifier with a partner who would be his future brother-in-law.

“I couldn’t tell him,” Danforth said, almost a little sheepishly. “If he had known he would have spilled the beans.”

And so as the extended family gathered at the first tee under the pretense of taking a photo for the annual Keane Christmas card the secret was known by only a scant few and Jen wasn’t one of them.

“I was very surprised,” she said. “I figured it would happen in the future, but not this weekend. This is my favorite weekend to come home and see family, and this is the best one ever.”

She’ll get no argument from her fiancé, even if, with a little more than golf on his mind he and Chris shot an 89 in qualifying and were dismissed to the consolation round of the third flight with a loss in Saturday morning match play.

“It has been really incredible,” Danforth said after his afternoon match. “The timing and the way it all worked out could not have been better. ”

DIVOTS
Advancing to Sunday morning’s semifinal matches are a few familiar names in the Tommy Keane annals.

In one bracket the father-son team of defending champions Shane and Nick MacDonald will face off against Pat Pelletier and Adam Pippin. The MacDonalds, bidding for their fifth championship in six years, dispatched Joe King and Lance Pelley, 3&2 in their morning match and knocked off Dean Cashman and Chris Hynes in the afternoon.

Pelletier and Pippin advanced with a 2&1 win over Mike and Mak Lyford in the morning and a victory over former champions Scott Peters and Andy Hydorn by the same score in the afternoon.

On the other side of the bracket Phin Choukas will make his second visit to the semis in as many years, this time with fellow Hanover High golf product Matt Wood. The first-time teammates scored a 2&1 win over Jeff and Alex Lazerowich in the morning before jumping out to a lead over qualifying medalists Mike Hathorn and Mitch Cable. They advanced when Hathorn’s lengthy birdie putt on 18 took a peek at the hole only to change its mind at the end.

Choukas and Wood will square off against another father-son team in Jim and Andrew Jankowski. The former Keane finalists took a 3&2 win over Roger and Tag Demment in the morning and then won a battle of onetime Dartmouth golfers by defeating Jamie Wallace and Rob Henley, 2&1.

Hathorn-Cable Approach Pays Off

HANOVER – On the green in a best-ball tournament one player has a four-foot putt and his teammate has a 14-footer.

If the four-footer is for par and the other is for birdie it would seem logical that having a par in hand would free up the second player to take a bold run at the birdie.

But who should putt first isn’t that simple according to seven-time Tommy Keane Invitational champion Scott Peters, particularly if both putts are for par, or birdie, or even bogey.

“I never understood why the the guy with the four-footer goes first,” said Peters, who teamed with longtime partner Andy Hydorn to shoot 68 in Friday qualifying for the 44th annual Keane event at Hanover Country Club. “I always want to know that my partner is still in it, because if he goes first and misses that four-footer, now I’m all alone. I’ve got more pressure than usual.”

But there can be a down side to having the player with the shorter putt go first even if he makes his par while his parter with the longer attempt is going for birdie.

“If he goes first and makes it I may be more aggressive than usual on my putt,” said Peters, “and that would mean I’m putting differently than I would normally.”

That’s exactly how it played out for Mitch Cable on the 10th hole Friday after partner Mike Hathorn tapped in a par putt.

“I had like a 15-footer and hit just an awful putt because I wanted to make sure it reached the hole and I hit it too firm,” explained Cable. “I hit it too hard and it didn’t take the break.

“But I still prefer to see the ball in the hole. We’ll do that because we aren’t great putters. When you make the par it takes the pressure off.”

Although Cable’s birdie putt zipped past the hole on 10 that was one of the few opportunities he and Hathorn did not cash in on in as they combined for a 6-under-par 65 to lead the field.

“Mikey hit it really good,” said Cable. “Between yesterday and today’s round he ended up hitting 31 straight greens before he finally missed a green on 16.

“I just filled in the gaps. When we needed a par I made a par. I made a couple birdies. He made four. He played great again.”

The defending champion father-son team of Shane and Nick MacDonald finished one shot back of the medalists with a 66.

Jim and Andrew Jankowski – another father-son team – came in at 67 along with the pairings of Adam Pippen and Pat Pelletier, and Jamie Wallace and Rob Henley.

Each of the top finishers has its own approach to team play.

While Peters prefers to have the player with the longer putt go first and Cable prefers it the other way, Shane MacDonald has a singular approach playing with his talented son.

“I don’t care if it’s a one-foot putt but I never want to see Nick not in the hole before I have to go,” he said with his usual hearty laugh. “I don’t want any weight on my shoulders.”

Jake Obar, the 2006 Keane champion, for the most part comes from the Peters school of thought. “Typically I would take the long one first because I want that to be the same way I always putt,” he said. “But if you have a slippery downhiller that’s 10 feet and your partner has a three-footer for par, maybe it makes sense for him to go first, just because your putt is slippery. But that’s rare.”

What happens on the green is just one of the strategies that comes into play in a tournament like the TKI. There’s also the matter of who hits first on the tee.

For Cable and Hathorn that is a no-brainer.

“Mike thrives under pressure so he’s always hitting last,” the Cable said. “That’s the way we have done it forever. I go first and he goes second because he’s so clutch. It makes it easy for me. I don’t have to worry. I can spray it anywhere and I know he’s going to hit it right down the middle.”

Like Cable, Peters prefers to hit first on the tee. His mindset is to put aside the team dynamic when he’s in the tee box and simply play the game in front of him.

“I’ve always done that,” Peters said. “Part of it is that I play fast, but I just want to play the hole and don’t need any burden or benefits from knowing that my partner is either in the woods or two feet from the flag. It has always been a comfort to me going first.”

By contrast it’s a comfort to Obar – who shot 73 in qualifying Friday with Ben Gardner – that traditional partner Billy Vielleux went ahead of him on the tee when they teamed up.

“Billy is a pretty consistent golfer whereas I’m a little more volatile, shall we say,” Obar said. “He always hit first. You like to get that first guy in play.”

Of course, getting two balls in play is even better.

“There is a relentlessness to that,” said Peters. “If you are playing with people who are always having two balls in play that’s hard. It doesn’t always work out that way, but that’s sort of our mindset.”

There are also different approaches to reading greens in team play.

“It’s a personal thing,” Peters said. “I always want an opinion from my partner. It doesn’t mean that’s what I’m going to do, but I want to know what he thinks.”

For Obar it depends on the putt.

“Billy and I have an understanding that I’m not going to say anything to him, and he’s not going to say anything to me unless we ask,” he said. “Even if you misread a putt you are going to hit it better than you would if somebody puts a doubt in your mind.”

There is no one right way or wrong strategy in a tournament like the Keane as Hanover pro Alex Kirk sees it.

“Everyone can do it their own way,” he said. “Whatever works for their team is the best for their team. The cream always rises to the top.”

Which is why Shane MacDonald’s über-successful gameplan since he started teaming up with his son is to let Nick do the heavy lifting.

“We do whatever is the least amount of pressure on me,” he said, laughing again. “Whatever freaks me out the least is what we do because Nick can handle it.”

DIVOTS
Match play begins Saturday morning with one of the marquee matches pitting Scott Peters and Andy Hydorn against Scott’s sons Ben and Mike, who qualified with a 70. Winners will square off in the afternoon along with consolation matches.

Semifinal matches will be held Sunday morning with the champion crowned after in the afternoon final.
