Comfortable At The Keane

HANOVER – Bob Donahue and Tim McCarthy have been coming to the Tommy Keane Invitational from the Worcester, Mass., area for a long time.

Make that a long, long time.

Sitting on the Hanover Country Club porch the 65-year-old friends will laugh and tell you that they’ve been teaming up at the Keane for 35 years or so, but that their history of playing with each other goes back further.

Make that a lot further.

“We went to kindergarten together,” McCarthy said. “I had the best chair until he stole it. He was that big in kindergarten.”
The Worcester Connection – McCarthy and Donahue

They are the last of their kind, these two Holy Cross grads, the final members of a cohort of upwards of 16 or so players who used to make a regular pilgrimage from Worcester for Hanover Country Club’s annual rite of summer.

“At one point in time we would have almost half a flight,” Donahue said wistfully. “We did that for years and years and years.

“In the early years we got a big condo over in Quechee. They didn’t used to have anything here on Sunday and if anybody got eliminated on Saturday we’d play over there on the Highland course. We always had a lot of fun up here.”

It was McCarthy who made the initial foray north for the Keane when it started in 1975.

“In the first year they wanted to get really good amateurs, which I am not,” he said with a laugh. “My partner at the time, Dennis Cooney, played in the Vermont  Open as an amateur. They sent invitations to every amateur who played in the Vermont Open. Dennis said to me, ‘Hey, why don’t we go up to this thing at Dartmouth?’

“Since then Bob and I have played a billion times.”

Their memories belong in a Tommy Keane time capsule.

“When we started playing Tommy Keane was still alive,” said McCarthy. “It would be about 100 degrees out and he’d be sitting there in his Cadillac.”

“He’d have the air conditioning on,” said Donahue, picking up the story.

“He’d put the window down and say, ‘Is it hot enough for you boys?’,” a laughing McCarthy added.

The two fondly recall playing with popular Dartmouth assistant football coach “Cactus Jack” Curtis and his son Darren, who Donahue recalled, “could hit it a thousand miles” and with Dom Zappala, the well-known Hanover clothier.

“He was a wonderful guy,” Donahue said. “He has a bench here now. We got to play with Art Bemis and John Donnelly, two of the finest gentlemen you would ever want to meet. To me, that’s what this is all about. Meeting guys like that.”

While many of the players they knew from years ago are gone, the Worcester players have watched not one but two generations come along to fill the void.

McCarthy remembers that in his first qualifying round 38 years ago he played with Seaver Peters, then Dartmouth’s director of athletics and now the father of six-time champions Scott and Mike.

“Seaver’s boys were about three feet tall when we started,” he said with a smile.

Now Scott’s son Ben has played in a couple of Keanes and younger brother Tom is probably champing at the bit to join him.

By their accounting Donahue and McCarthy have missed no more than two or perhaps three Keane tournaments since the mid-1970s, each time for serious family reasons.

“It’s not about the golf,” Donahue said. “It’s just a lot of fun with good people and a lot of laughs.

“They are gentlemen up here. You root for the other guys. You hope he hits his best shot and then you hope that you hit one just a little bit better.”

McCarthy, who once played to a five handicap, is an 11 now and points out that it’s not just the calendar that is to blame. “I’m in the insurance business, still,” he said with a laugh. “I have a life sentence. I only get to play once a week because work gets in the way.”

That’s not a problem for Donahue, who retired in 2007 after a career in high tech and tries to hit the links three times a week. Once a seven – although his childhood buddy protests that he might have gotten as low as a five – he currently plays to a 14.

Playing with Dave and Ron Cioffi, the longtime Massachusetts teammates opened qualifying Friday with a 74 to earn a spot in the first flight of match play. Although they were sent to the consolation bracket Saturday, their opening round was a reminder about why they keep coming back.

“We love playing with the Cioffis,” said Donahue. “They are wonderful guys. We’ve probably played with them six or eight times over the years. We are about the same abilities and oftentimes end up in the same flight.”

Not to mention at the same table at the back of Hanover Country Club, sharing yucks and perhaps even a beverage or two if the truth be told.

“The best porch in golf,” Donahue said for the third time in a short conversation. “You just can’t beat it. Back in the old days, you couldn’t hear yourself talk back here.”

“It’s not quite like that anymore, but we’ll keep coming back as long as we can,” said McCarthy, who is only too happy to share the annual ride north with the buddy who once booted him out of the best chair in kindergarten.

SATURDAY ACTION
Two of the four afternoon matches in the Championship flight came down to the final hole with the porch-sitters watching closely. After Mike Peters drained a tricky uphill putt for an up-and-down par Chris Hynes matched him to give the team of Hynes and Dean Cashman the win over Mike and brother Scott.

Hynes and Cashman will face the team of Tyler Silver and Chris Pollard, which held on to beat No. 1 seed Jake Obar and Joe Toland on 18.

In the other half of the bracket Mitch Cable and Mike Hathorn claimed a 4&3 win and will square off with Shane and Nick MacDonald, 3&1 winners.

Play in the TKI wraps up with semifinal matches Sunday morning and the championship in the afternoon.

The shot of the day Saturday was the second hole-in-one in as many days. This time it was Paul Spera acing the 124-yard fourth hole. Paolo Bentiviglio had a hole-in-one on the 14th a day earlier.

Saturday's Brackets

Family: What The TKI Is All About

HANOVER – The Tommy Keane Invitational committee members would have been well within their rights to have said no.

Jeremiah Daly will be forever thankful they didn’t.

Jeremiah was 17 in the summer of 1998, just shy of the 18-year-old cutoff to play in the venerable Hanover Country Club tournament. His father, Jerry, twice a Dartmouth captain and the college’s only four-time All-America golfer, had been so looking forward to teaming up with him that he petitioned the Keane committee in hopes of getting an exception for his oldest child, who would turn 18 that December.
Jeremiah Daly on the first tee Friday.

Out of respect for the senior Daly, who won the inaugural Keane in 1975, repeated a year later and claimed the title for the third time in 1982, the committee elected to let father and son share a weekend on the links together.

Although the Daly team would fall in 20 holes in the Keane quarterfinals, their Tommy Keane pairing was one they would never forget for one poignant reason.

They would never have the chance to repeat it.

Jerry Daly was diagnosed with brain cancer the next year. He passed away after a valiant battle with the disease on Feb. 9, 2002 at age 48.

“The rule was 18 but we sent them a letter asking if they would let us in and they let us in,” Jeremiah recalled this week. “I am really glad that they let me play with my dad, because that was the only time. If they had said, ‘No thanks, wait until next year,’ there would have been no next year for us.”

Team Daly proved to be a formidable duo with Jeremiah getting Dartmouth golf coach Bill Johnson’s attention by breaking 70 for the first time by shooting a 66 in the qualifying round, Jerry posting a 65 and the father-son team shooting 60 to take medalist honors in record fashion.

Jeremiah would follow in his father’s footsteps as a Dartmouth golf captain before graduating in 2004. Several years later the Tommy Keane committee elected to honor his late father by establishing the Daly Medalist Award.

“That means a lot to me,” said Daly, who fondly recalls Johnson cutting down a 7-iron for him to swing on early trips to Hanover to watch his dad play in the Keane, and then caddying for his father in the tournament when he grew older.

“I want to win this some year really, really badly,” he said. “I’ve wanted to win it since I was a little kid. It would be extra special to follow in my dad’s footsteps again.”

But that’s just one of the reasons why Daly goes out of his way to return to Hanover, including one year when he was working in London and jetted back just to play in the Keane. The nature of the event, which combines good golf with great camaraderie, has a special hold on him.

“I made a lot of lifelong friends from the Upper Valley area through the tournament,” the Massachusetts resident said. “There are people I would play golf with on the weekends when I was studying at Dartmouth that I probably wouldn’t have known or met otherwise. Guys like Scott Peters, Jimmy Jankowski, John Donnelly and his dad, as well as Art Bemis. This is the one time of year I get to see people like that and rekindle our friendship.

“Not many tournament have had the longevity that this one has. Not many tournaments mean as much to people as this one does.”

And rest assured, because the Tommy Keane committee once bent a rule, not many tournaments will ever mean as much to Jeremiah
Daly as the one he played in on the final weekend of July back when he was 17.

FRIDAY QUALIFYING
In what should have been a surprise to no one, the 2013 TKI Qualifying Round saved its best for last.

Brothers Scott and Mike Peters shot a 4-under 67 in the first tee time of the day and no one was able to beat them until former Hartford High School standouts Jake Obar and Joe Toland carded a 65 in the final grouping of the day to claim the 2013 TKI Daly Medalist Award.
Daly Medalist Plaque

Nor should it have been a surprise that former champions Shane and Nick MacDonald matched the Peters with a 67 playing with Obar and Toland.

Also coming in at 67, in the penultimate tee time of the day, was the tandem of Hartford golf coach Mike Hathorn and Mitch Cable, his former former player and cousin.

The shot of the day came on the 145-yard, par-3 14th when Paolo Bentivoglio recorded his third career hole-in-one at Hanover. Ironically, all three have come on different holes.

Bentivoglio’s shot came seconds after Matt Wood’s tee shot hit the pin. Teammate Torrey Viger followed by hitting a shot that from the tee had the group thinking it might have gone in the hole.

Action continues today with morning and afternoon matches. The championship will be decided Sunday afternoon when the survivors of the day’s earlier semifinals square off.
