Williams/Cilley Claim 45th TKI

Bobby Williams accepts a congratulatory handshake from Brett Wilson as Craig Steckowych extends his hand and Williams' teammate Jim Cilley strolls into view. (Check back tomorrow for more photos.)

KEANE-LAKE SUNAPEE A WINNING MATCH

NEW LONDON – Cast adrift with the closing of Hanover Country Club, the Tommy Keane Invitational found safe harbor this year at Lake Sunapee Country Club.

To listen to many in the field of 64 teams who competed in the three-day event it could do worse than put down permanent roots at the par-70, 6,704-yard Donald Ross layout. And it probably didn’t hurt the chances of it happening that one of its favorite sons played on the winning team.

Four-time Sunapee club champion Bobby Williams joined up with Jim Cilley to help the qualifying round medalists capture the 45th renewal of the Keane with a 2-and-1 victory over three-time champion Craig Steckowych and teammate Brett Wilson who qualified second with a 64.

The last team in the field, Williams and Cilley closed out the match on 17 with a Cilley eagle to cap an up-and-down back nine.

“It was a little rocky,” the long-hitting Williams said with a laugh of the final round. “But we were making good putts for pars, which sometimes is what you have to do when you aren’t necessarily hitting it close or doing anything spectacular. We scraped away with pars but also had some birdies.”

Down a hole at the turn after a sloppy seventh hole they conceded without pulling out their putters, Williams and Cilley dodged a bullet that would have sent them two down when Williams made a critical up-and-down from behind the green on 12. They then drew even when the Lake Sunapee half of the team drained a bomb on 13. But after winning 14 to go one up they gave the hole right back when Cilley missed a short one on 15.

He made up for it with a long putt to win 16 that he had no intention of missing.

“I was just mad after 15,” he said. “That was just a poor stroke and my thought process after that was, ‘It’s not going to happen again.’ ”

It didn’t, with help from an old friend.

“I didn’t putt well yesterday and Bobby made everything, so I went back to my old reliable putter I’ve used in every tournament I’ve ever won,” Cilley explained. “It’s a center-shafted Cameron I bought for $35 on eBay in like 2007. It’s funny. I went back to it on the putting green last night before I left and it was, ‘Yup, it feels better.’ I went to it today and putted great.”

One up after winning 16, Williams and Cilley joined the other two by striping their tee balls on the 500-yard, par-5 17th.  But while Williams and Cilley were both on the green in two, Steckowych was in a bunker well below the elevated putting surface and Wilson’s ball rolled over the first cut before stopping against the longer grass behind the green.

After Steckowych came out of the trap to three feet, it was Wilson opting for a wedge that came out hot and was headed well off the green before plunking into the flagstick and stopping within easy birdie range.

While Wilson said he got lucky that a shot he hoped to come off his club differently nailed the pin to give him a chance, Cilley wasn’t surprised.

“Knowing Brett, I always think it’s going in,” he said. “He always does something to get it to that point. I wasn’t even watching it. I was looking at my line and the flag, and I saw it slam into it. I  was like, ‘Aw, come on.’ ”

Williams was standing over a putt to win but instead it was Cilley grabbing his trusty Scotty Cameron to finish the job.

“The putt I had was a fairly easy one,” he said. “I had it this morning to close out the match. Bobby said, ‘You or me?’ I said, ‘No, I want this one.’ ”

When his putt found the bottom of the cup the 2011 New Hampshire amateur winner and his homestanding teammate had what Cilley feels is a significant addition to a solid golf resumé.

“I’ve had some success in New Hampshire amateur events, although not much in the last decade,” he said. "I won the Four Ball with somebody else in 2010, the Mid-Am in 2008 and the New Hampshire Am, so I had a little stretch. I feel like I’ve played real well sometimes since then but I just couldn’t get a win.

“This was a stacked field with Nick MacDonald, Pat Pelletier, the two guys we played in the semifinals and Brett and Steck in the finals. It was as good as winning anything you can win in New Hampshire golf in just as strong a field.”

Wilson gave the winners credit for coming from behind in a somewhat uneven back nine.

“It’s hard to expect that after 36 holes in the heat in two days  you are going to have  your best golf and we ran out of gas,” he said. “It was evident they did, too, but they made shots when they needed to, and that made the difference.”

Steckowych, who won the Keane in 1997, ’98 and ’99, enjoyed his return to a tournament he isn't sure he played in more than once since his last victory, a lengthy absence he blamed on the grind of playing in and traveling to the New England Am in far-flung parts of the region the week before.

“It’s somewhere between 18 and 21 years since I last played in (the Keane),” he said. “It was a little disappointing this afternoon but for the most part we played well all week. We bogeyed 14 and 16 and prior to that we had met just one bogey all week, qualifying matches and everything.

“It’s a great event and I’d like to keep playing it in the future if there are no conflicts. It’s almost more about the camaraderie than the winning.”

That kind of appreciation for the Tommy Keane is music to the ears of tournament organizer Scott Peters.

“Sunday afternoon after the TK is always the same,” he said. “Everybody is exhausted but with smiles on their faces. This year was very  unique in a lot of ways, not just the change of venue but the challenges of the pandemic. There were a lot of balls in the air and I think for the most part we caught them, but there’s obviously things we will take a look at and try to smooth out.

“It was the first time Sunapee had done it and they did an unbelievable job.  Craig (Gardner, head pro) and Aaron (Kinglsey, first assistant) and their staff did and wonderful job. I think Sunapee was a great fit for another spectacular Tommy Keane weekend and we look forward to coming back.”

Final Brackets

Williams and Cilley win 2&1

Check in tonight for full coverage

Steckowych-Wilson 1 up at the turn

It's been neck and neck throughout.

Final Set

Williams-Cilley win 2&1 and Steckowych-Wilson win on 18 to set up final.

11:30 Sunday Update

Both semifinal matches in the Championship Flight are all-square at the turn.

Two finals have been determined:

• In the first flight No 5 Tom Keane and Sam Natti scored a 7-and-5 win over top-seeded Luke Marrinan and Dillon Sass in one semifinal. In the other No. 7 Dan Campbell and Nick Trottier outlasted No. 11 Jonathan Keane and Michael Keane.

• In the third flight, top-seeded Cody Dodds and Ryan Bergeron punched their ticket in the final match with a win over No. 4 Ryan Fay and Chris House. They will play No. 3 Tom Dupree and Michael Garvey, 4&2 winners over No. 7 Griffin Kiritsy and Andrew Loney.
I will try – emphasis on the word try – to offer periodic updates on the Championship Flight match this afternoon. A change in the program I use to update this site with an iPod Touch might make that impossible.

Either way, I'll be posting the final result here after interviewing the champions and will have a story, brackets and a few photos tonight. Stay tuned.

Until later . . .

Recognizing A Legend

NEW LONDON – Asked to share a few words about the late Seaver Peters – whose place on the Mount Rushmore of the Tommy Keane Invitational golf tournament is recognized this weekend with “Seaver” stitched on the back of player hats – his grandson Tom Peters aced the challenge.

“It’s been a tough year for us,” he told the event’s opening-night dinner gathering. “We didn’t get to celebrate his life, so this is the first real service we’ve had. I am glad we are all here together to celebrate his life this way.”

It’s a way Seaver Peters would have appreciated.

A former Dartmouth ice hockey standout who was instrumental in getting the tournament off the ground during his tenure as the Big Green athletic director from 1967-83, he died earlier this year at age 87. An on-campus  commemoration was set for March 28 but fell victim to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Tommy Keane tournament really is a fitting tribute to the silver-haired Peters, who played in the early days of the venerable event he helped start in 1975.

“This was Seaver’s baby,” said Jeff Frechette, a longtime Keane player who worked as a trainer under Peters in the Dartmouth athletic department and knew him well. “It is such an important event to so many golfers, and although we couldn’t play in Hanover it is still going strong. That’s a testament to what it has been, what it is and what it will be. And to Seaver Peters. He was a driving force for a lot of great things, including the Tommy Keane.”

Jim Jankowski credits Peters, like himself a former Big Green hockey player, with introducing him to the tournament as a Dartmouth undergrad.

“I ran into him and he asked if I wanted to play,” said Jankowski, who won the event for the first time last year with son Andrew. Both are former Big Green golfers. “Seaver said to get my stuff in and I’d be all set. He really wanted Dartmouth golfers to be involved.”

Jankowski would go on to join the Keane committee a decade or so ago.

“When I came on Seaver was still completely involved,” he said. “He paid attention to every detail. As the years went by he was doing a little less but he was always there.”

In addition to having his name on the back of golf hats this year, the man so integral to the TKI was the inspiration for the establishment of the Seaver Peters Award which recognizes the player or team that “embodies the spirit of Seaver Peters, his love of golf and good fellowship, his competitive drive and sportsmanship, the warmth of his smile and the special devotion he had for this unique event.”

Not surprisingly, the inaugural winner was Peters’ son Scott, widely credited for helping keep alive the tournament that meant so much to his father, and now to his own sons.

“I just have such great pride in who he was and what he did,” Scott Peters said. “With Seaver passing and Hanover Country Club closing this is a new page, but it signals a bright future for the event, and I think that would make my father proud.”

DIVOTS
The storybook finish for the Tommy Keane will have to wait another year as the team of Pat Pelletier and Adam Pippin outlasted Ben and Tom Peters in 20 holes in the afternoon match moments before Ted Lyon and Brendan Monahan defeated Scott Peters and Andy Hydorn on the 18th hole.

Pelletier and Pippin, who made it to the championship match a year ago, will play Craig Steckowych and Brett Wilson, who knocked off defending champions Jim and Andrew Jankowski in the afternoon. The other semi will pit Jim Cilley and Bobby Williams against Lyon and Monahan.

A Home Away From Home

A crowd watches the "march" of three teams playing for one spot in the championship flight.

The putt that gave the Lazerowich team the final spot in the championship flight is halfway down the hole.

NEW LONDON – The closing of what once figured to be its forever home added an ironic symmetry to the Tommy Keane Invitational golf tournament, which relocated this year from Hanover Country Club to Lake Sunapee Country Club.

Tommy Keane was the Dartmouth golf coach and head professional at Hanover for 45 years. With the closing of the college facility this spring, the 45th renewal of the event that honors his memory is being conducted at the club where he, too, landed after his run at HCC ended.

That the tournament moved to same course where Keane taught for three years after he finished his tenure at Hanover didn’t surprise Scott Peters, who heads up the Keane organizing committee. That it was able to do relocate and not miss a beat in the COVID-19 era did.

“A lot of people thought the tournament wouldn't happen for a lot of reasons, not only because of Hanover Country Club, but the pandemic,” Peters said. “Last fall I floated the idea of coming down here to Craig Gardner (the LSCC pro) sometime in the future because I saw the handwriting on the wall about Hanover. I just didn’t realize the future would be now.”

While Peters figured days were limited at the only home the Keane had ever known, little did he foresee that a world-wide pandemic would make keeping the four-ball tournament going that much more challenging.

“At first I thought there was no way we were having a tournament this year,” he admitted. “There were a lot of things out of our control that needed to happen, and the fact that New Hampshire is in a pretty good place with the pandemic was invaluable.”

Portsmouth’s Tommy Keane, grandson of the man the tournament honors, was relieved when he learned the tournament would live on.

“We were very disappointed by the decision the college made about Hanover Country Club but this is a fantastic golf course,” he said. "They have treated us tremendously and to allow us to come down and carry on this tradition means a lot to not only our family, but to all of the participants.”

Just as Lake Sunapee was a godsend to the TK, hosting the three-day event was a boon to the club at a difficult time according to Gardner, the head pro.

“We lost all our corporate outings this summer,” he said. “I read an article the other day that said if your club isn’t doing something to make up for all that you lost, you are paying for it at the end of the year.”

The way former champion Jake Obar sees it, the Keane-Lake Sunapee marriage is a win for all sides, most importantly the golfers.

“I think we have more amped-up people this year because everybody has been locked up in their house,” he said.  “Everybody here is cognizant of what’s going on and being smart about it. This is a safe way to have a really great time on a lot of people’s favorite weekend of the year.”

DIVOTS
First-time Keane team Jim Cilley and Bobby Williams earned medalist honors with a 7-under 63. Cilley is a former New Hampshire Amateur champion from Belmont, N.H., while Williams is a former Lake Sunapee champion. Craig Steckowych, who has won multiple New Hampshire Amateur titles and played in the U.S. Senior Open, teamed with Brett Wilson to shoot 64 with the team of Ben and Tom Peters holding down local honors with 65. The tournament continues through Sunday.
